Hot Tub Removal/Disposal

How to Prepare an Old Spa for Removal

Before your hot tub can be removed, you'll need to disconnect it from power, drain it and let it dry. You'll also need to clear a path for access.

If the spa is old and not just going to a new home, you could also consider breaking it down into smaller pieces.

It will be a lot easier to transport the dismantled parts than the entire spa—though it's also a lot of work to break down a spa safely.

Most disposal companies charge by how difficult the job will be. This means the more you can do to prepare your spa for removal, the cheaper the hauling cost.

If you do want to break the spa down yourself, here's what you'll need to do:

  • Disconnect any power source (if you haven't already) and empty the spa
  • Wear safety goggles and protective gloves
  • Remove any electrical components (these could be recycled or sold separately)
  • Saw the acrylic shell and wood frame into pieces, being careful to avoid any jets
  • For the cover, cut out the foam inserts and break them down
